Viticulture in the Kingdom of Spain can be found throughout the country, including to a large extent in the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands. Grape vines were cultivated here around 5,000 years ago and therefore has a very old tradition. In the most mountainous country in Europe, the soil of the country's best vineyards is most often composed of slate rock, while in the lowlands in the north and east it is made up of sedimentary rock and in the coastal regions there are light, sandy soils. Climatically, Spain is divided into three zones with hot summers, cold winters and high amounts of precipitation in the north, extremely hot summers, cold winters and very little precipitation in the center and hot summers with little rain on the southern coast. With around 955,000 hectares of vineyards, Spain is one of the world's leading wine producers, along with France and Italy.
