Tenuta La Giustiniana

Tenuta La Giustiniana
The origins of this traditional property, in the Rovereto di Gavi area, on the Piedmontese foothills of the Apennines, go far back: as early as 900 AD, the yearbooks of the Republic of Genoa mention a Benedictine settlement on the hills around the River Lemme. The "Grangia Bassignana" is mentioned in a document from 1250 as an agricultural exclave of the Abbey of Rivalta Scrivia, specifically for the production of wine. An observation and defense tower, a chapel and various halls with vaulted ceilings and capitals have survived from this settlement. In 1625 ownership passed to the Giustiniani family. A member of this family, commander of the Genoese troops, victoriously defended the fortress of Gavi from one of the many French sieges. The fortress was an important strategic military and commercial hub. It was the same Giustiniana family that built their villa in neoclassical style and that still dominates the access to the property from the top of the hill. At that time the estate was given the name GIUSTINIANA.
