Ca´Marcanda - Angelo Gaja

The Gaja family has been based in Piedmont since the mid-17th century. The winery in Barbaresco was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the great-grandfather of the current owner, Angelo Gaja. Angelo was also the name of the founder's son, who married the legendary Clotilde Rey in 1905. Together, the two of them laid the foundation for the quality philosophy that has characterized the company to this day.

In 1996 Gaja bought a second estate in Tuscany, Ca' Marcanda in Castagneto Carducci. Mainly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as some Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Sangiovese were planted on 100 hectares. The wines from Ca' Marcanda are called Promis, Magari and Camarcanda and were launched on the market for the first time with the 2000 vintage.

Ca'Marcanda, the Gaja family's newest winery, is located in Castagneto Carducci, a commune in the upper Tuscan Maremma south of Livorno that is one of the most dynamic wine regions in Italy. The name of the winery "Ca' Marcanda" comes from the Piedmontese dialect and refers to the countless rounds of negotiations that Angelo Gaja needed to persuade the previous owners to sell the estate, on which until then mainly fruit growing, olive growing and cattle breeding and only very little viticulture had been practiced. The terroir of the estate is characterized by two different types of soil: the loamy terre brune (brown soil) and the stony terre chiare (white soil) with their high lime content. The special climate of Bolgheri - hot summers with fresh sea air and cold nights - is ideal for the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah varieties. As in his native Piedmont, Angelo Gaja also strives for wines typical of their origin in the Maremma, which are an expression of their unique terroir.

Ca' Marcanda di Gaja Magari Toscana
With its luscious Merlot fruit and spicy Cabernet aromas, Magari represents the quintessence of the upper Maremma: black berries and fresh mint with a note of coffee. Its taste is full and round, but very elegant and fine in texture.
