Located in Nantou Hsien, Taiwan, Nantou Distillery was founded in 1978 by Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation, a state-owned tobacco and alcohol manufacturer in Taiwan. The first whiskey was not produced until 2008. Prior to 2010, the mash, wort and wash were produced at a nearby brewery that Nantou no longer used when they installed their own German mash tunnel and wash facilities (with 15,000 liter capacity) at the distillery. Nantou currently has four stills made by Forsyths of Rothes in Speyside which have been installed at the distillery of varying capacities. One can distill 7,000 liters, two can distill 5,000 liters each and the last still 2,000 liters.
The on-site racking facility is capable of storing 4,500 bourbon and sherry casks ranging in capacity from 180 to 225 liters. Taiwan's humid and hot climate means that the Angels' Share is around 5% per year. A fresh underground water supply is used to reduce the strength of all whiskey produced in Nantou.
