Italy - Sicily

Sicily
The largest island in the Mediterranean is also the largest region in Italy with a land area of 25,703 km². In the 8th century B.C. The Greeks founded their first colonies in the 4th century BC and brought their vines and viticulture with them to the island. Viticulture takes place at altitudes of up to 900 meters on around 119,000 hectares, mainly in the west and southeast. This makes Sicily by far the largest wine-growing region in Italy. The climate is characterized by very hot and dry summers with little rainfall and African conditions prevail, especially in the south. However, due to the intense sunlight on the slopes and large temperature fluctuations between day and night, there are very good conditions for viticulture.
