Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and, geologically speaking, the oldest part of Italy. As early as the 9th century BC. In the 4th century BC, winegrowing was practiced by the Sardinians, who learned this art from the Phoenicians. Due to the changing influence of many peoples, a diverse spectrum of viticulture developed, which was particularly influenced by the Spanish from the 13th century onwards. Viticulture takes place mainly in the gently hilly Campdano plains and covers around 26,700 hectares. Due to the very different temperatures, region-dependent wines are created here. The fruity, fresh white wines feel particularly at home in the cooler north, although there are also good conditions for red, white and dessert wines on the warmer south and west sides. Overall, the cultivation is divided into two thirds red and one third white wines.
