Located on Japan's main island of Honshu near Hiroshima, the Chugoku Jozo distillery has been producing fruit liqueurs, sake and shochu (a strong spirit) since 1918. In 1990, the company began to devote itself to the production of blended whiskey as well. The whiskey is aged in sherry and brandy casks in a unique location in the heart of the mountainous region of Nishi Chugoku Sanchi. This unusual place is a tunnel in Togouchi with a length of 361 meters, which was built in 1970 by the Japanese railway company JR to extend the route from Kabe to Hamada in Shimane. However, this project never came to completion, so this tunnel, now owned by the Togouchi Municipality, caught the interest of Chugoku Jozo, since with a constant temperature of 14°C and a humidity of 80%, it offers ideal conditions for the maturation of the shochu and whiskey supplies. Togouchi has been maturing in this unusual place ever since.
