Amaro

An Amaro is an Italian herbal liqueur. The term comes from Italian and means "bitter". The Amaro designation is typically only used for liqueurs made in Italy.

It is made by macerating herbs, roots, flowers, bark and citrus peel in neutral spirits or wine. Aging takes place in oak barrels or bottles. The recipes often come from monasteries or pharmacies, some even from the 17th century.
