The first ancestors of the Antinori family in Florence can be found at the beginning of the 13th century, when the family moved to Florence from Calenzano, a small town between Florence and Prato. They had been known in Calenzano since 1188. The family initially traded in silk and in 1285 enrolled in the "Silk Merchants' Guild". Wine production is envisaged in 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joins the "Guild of Wine Merchants", bringing new value to the family's lands in the Arno Valley around Florence. However, it was not until the 16th century that Alessandro Antinori, banker and merchant, made the wine from his estates known in Italy and around the world, traveling from Lyon to Flanders, from Spain to Algeria.
