Italy - Calabria

Deep in the south of Italy is the “tip of the boot”, the region of Calabria. As early as 1,000 years B.C. In the 4th century BC, Greek settlers founded colonies here and founded one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Italy. Dry and hot summers, as well as harsh and cold winters inland, characterize the predominantly Mediterranean climate, in which there are hardly any temperature fluctuations due to the positive influence of the sea. With just around 9,500 hectares of vineyards, viticulture plays only a minor role in Calabria and takes place predominantly in the north and south. Due to the climate, 90% of the more suitable red wine varieties are grown and only a small proportion of white wines are grown.
