The Macallan distillery is one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland, after - so it is believed - years and decades earlier whiskey was moonshine-distilled here.
The enigmatically named Easter Elchie House sits gracefully on a hilltop near Craigellachie - on the west side of the River Spey. The almost 300-year-old house can be seen from afar.
From here you have a wide panoramic view of the plain, where the sight of the place seems almost magical. Today, what was originally a small country estate looks more like a stylish whiskey château and is the symbol of The Macallan.
The Macallan still uses the rare Golden Promise barley variety, abandoned by other distilleries as it was considered too difficult and expensive to grow. The pot stills used are said to be the smallest stills in the Speyside region!
