Ron Zacapa got its name from the city of Zacapa, a good 100 km northeast of Guatemala City, and was first produced in 1976 to mark the city's 100th anniversary. The creator was Alejandro Burgaleta, a doctor and chemist who oversaw the rum's blending, stabilization and aging process. Matured at 2,300 meters above sea level in the "house above the clouds" in old bourbon, sherry and Pedro Ximénez casks. The resulting rum is incredibly dark, can be drunk neat and delights rum drinkers with its rich and sweet flavors. The distinctive Solera system creates the excellent flavors of roasted coffee, vanilla and dark chocolate and butterscotch.
