Blanton's was launched in 1984 by Master Distiller Elmer T. Lee in the tradition of his mentor, Colonel Albert B. Blanton, himself a true Kentucky gentleman and Bourbon aristocrat. From 1921-1952 he managed what was then the George T. Stagg Distillery.
Elmer T. Lee, on the other hand, was hired as a technician by Albert Blanton in 1949 and appointed Master Distiller in 1984 and created "Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon" in honor of his mentor, as the first single barrel bourbon worldwide.
He revolutionized the industry by creating the "Super Premium" category for bourbon with the world's first single barrel bourbon. This idea was quite radical at the time because it challenged the identity of what most people understood by bourbon. Today most distilleries offer one or more single cask bottlings, but Blanton's was the first and still one of the best single cask bottlings on the market.
Although the distillery is now called Buffalo Trace, the concept of bottling cask after cask using the methods of Colonel Blanton and Elmer T. Lee to obtain this outstanding bourbon remains unchanged. Therefore, enjoyment is strictly limited worldwide.
